The war in Vietnam had been underway for six years prior to the beginning of the 1960s, but it wasn't until 1962 that the United States had a very dominant military presence in Vietnam with over 9,000 troops compared to the mere 800 that were there during the '50s. The war began with the rise to power of Ho Chi Minh and his communist party in North Vietnam – the war was fought between North Vietnam as well as their Southern Allies and South Vietnam and their main ally the United States. Support from the United States came from their new strict policies about aiding countries with communist regimes or countries under the threat of becoming communist nations.
