The pop art movement began in the mid 1950’s, but grew in popularity during the early 1060’s. It generally depicts mass culture objects and media stars, and many say it is enthusiastic endorsement of the capitalist market. The movement aims to blur the boundaries between high art and low culture. This meant that there should be no hierarchy of culture, and art may borrow from any source. Pop artists believed everything is interconnected and embraces the post-WWII manufacturing and media booom as inspiration. Some of the most well known and influential artists during the movement were Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist, Roy Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol. Most pop artists actually started out working in commercial art. Ruscha was a graphic designer, Rosenquist worked as a billboard painter, an Warhol was a successful magazine illustrator and graphic designer. Their background in the commercial art world trained them in the visual vocabulary of mass culture as well as the techniques to seamlessly merge different kinds of art and culture.
