It is presumed to have originated to social movements in the European 19th and 20th century. Examples would be Bohemians and Eastern religion and spirituality. The movement focused on harmony with nature, artistic experimentation, communal living, free use of substances, and in ideological world view of peace. The movement was a fight against the mainstream ideals expressed through clothing, use of drugs, sex, and music. This culture spread, becoming a counterculture and then a subculture.
